Applying without a clear target
If every role looks suitable, your CV may be trying to serve too many purposes. Choose a small number of role families and write down the evidence you have for each. Broaden your search deliberately when necessary, rather than submitting the same application everywhere.
Sending claims without examples
“Excellent communication” does not explain how you work. Describe a real situation: resolving a customer query, coordinating a delivery or presenting a project. Employers can assess concrete actions more easily than unsupported adjectives.
Missing the application instructions
A strong CV cannot replace a required form, job reference or qualification. Before submitting, check the deadline, destination, document format and mandatory information. Save the advert and confirmation so you can follow up accurately.
Treating every advert as verified
A familiar logo is not enough to establish who posted an opportunity. Find the employer through an independent route and check that the vacancy or recruiter can be confirmed. Pause when a request for money or sensitive information does not make sense in the process.
Using only one search channel
Combine appropriate job boards, employer career pages and specialist recruiters. Track the source of each application and avoid duplicate submissions for the same vacancy. If a source repeatedly produces irrelevant results, refine its filters or replace it.
Waiting without reviewing your evidence
If suitable applications receive no response, review whether the CV shows the essential requirements. If interviews happen but offers do not, practise explaining your examples and ask for feedback where available. Neither pattern proves a single cause; look for repeatable issues before changing your approach.
Letting the search take over every day
Choose manageable time blocks for finding roles, preparing applications and learning. Keep records outside your inbox. A weekly review of applications, responses and next actions creates a more useful measure of progress than counting every vacancy you opened.
