Start with a job requirement, not a course advert
Find several roles you would realistically apply for and note the credentials they request. Separate required professional qualifications from optional vendor certificates and certificates of attendance. They serve different purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Match the credential to your current level
For a beginner, foundational learning and a practical project may be more useful than an advanced exam built around years of experience. Read the provider’s prerequisites, syllabus and assessment format. Ask what you should be able to do after completing the programme.
Compare learning routes by field
For technology, investigate the official learning paths for the tools in your target role. For project work, consider whether you need introductory knowledge or an experience-based credential. For accounting, healthcare or another regulated occupation, check the appropriate professional pathway rather than assuming a short course provides entry.
Verify the provider and qualification
Where a provider claims a nationally recognised qualification, check the qualification and provider through the relevant official channels. The South African Qualifications Authority and DHET are starting points for qualification and education information. Vendor certifications should be checked directly with the issuing vendor.
Calculate the full commitment
Include tuition, exam fees, materials, travel, retakes and renewal requirements where applicable. Check whether prices include tax and whether terms are written clearly. Ask about the support available if you fall behind and read refund conditions before enrolling.
Pair study with something you can demonstrate
Build a small project, case study or practice task that matches the intended work. Explain the problem, your method and the limitations. Keep credentials accurate on your CV: completing a course is different from passing an exam or receiving professional registration.
Decide how you will measure value
Choose a concrete goal such as understanding a required tool or qualifying to sit an assessment. Revisit that goal after the course. No certificate guarantees employment, and collecting unrelated credentials can use time that would be better spent gaining relevant experience.
