Look beyond the headline number.
Understand what goes into an offer and prepare for a clearer conversation about pay.
Compare like with like
Compare roles with similar responsibilities, experience requirements, location and working arrangements. A job title alone is not enough to establish a useful comparison.
Understand the package
Ask whether the quoted figure is basic salary or total cost to company. Clarify the payment period, benefits, variable pay and which parts are guaranteed. Gross pay and take-home pay are different figures.
Build an evidence base
Collect recently advertised ranges for comparable roles and note the dates and sources. Ask recruiters what the employer has budgeted. Treat any single example as a reference point rather than a market benchmark.
Prepare your conversation
Describe the responsibilities you would take on and the experience you bring. Ask for the budgeted range, explain your expectations and consider the complete package before responding.
Confirm the details
Request the complete offer in writing, including salary, benefits, working hours and any conditions attached to bonuses. Ask the employer to explain anything that is unclear before you decide.
