Find the organisation independently

Do not rely only on a link or phone number in the message you received. Locate the organisation’s official website independently and look for its careers information or contact route. A familiar logo, polished document or professional-looking email signature is not sufficient proof of identity.

Check the specific vacancy

Look for a role reference, responsibilities, location, requirements and application instructions. If you cannot find the vacancy, ask through the organisation’s verified contact route. Some recruitment is confidential, but the recruiter should still be able to explain its identity and process appropriately.

Inspect the destination before entering details

Read the website address carefully. A recruitment platform can legitimately differ from the employer’s domain, so verify it by following the link from the employer’s own website. Avoid assuming that a secure connection alone proves an organisation is genuine.

Question unexplained requests for money

Pause if you are told to pay urgently to secure an interview, release an offer or buy equipment through an unfamiliar seller. Ask what the payment covers and verify the request independently. Do not let a promised job or tight deadline substitute for a clear explanation.

Share information in proportion to the stage

A first enquiry should not require you to reveal account passwords, one-time codes or banking access. Before sharing identity documents or other sensitive records, confirm who is collecting them, why and through which verified process. Remove unnecessary private information from publicly visible CVs.

Watch for inconsistent communication

Compare the employer name, job duties, location and pay across the advert and messages. Be cautious when the details change without explanation or when you are pressured to move immediately to a new channel. Ask questions and pause when answers do not make sense.

If you have already shared something

Keep the messages and relevant details. Contact the affected account or financial-service provider through its official route if access or payment information may be involved. Follow the provider’s guidance for securing the account and use appropriate official reporting channels.

Keep verification separate from optimism

A role can sound appealing and still need checking. Ask a trusted person to review an unusual request and take time to verify the facts. The goal is to make an informed application through a genuine process, not to act quickly because an opportunity feels scarce.
